Racism Rears its Ugly Head at World Cup Qualifier

INTERNATIONAL: He might not have scored, but Lionel Messi will be pleased that Argentina extended their unbeaten run on Thursday night to 21 games. They notched up a comfortable 3-1 win over Venezuela in their World Cup qualifier in Caracas. Elsewhere on Thursday night, Brazil beat Chile 1-0, Australia thumped China 3-0, and the Netherlands were held to a 1-all draw by Norway, but it was the Hungary-England clash that has everyone talking.

It was an easy 4-0 win for England, and while Hungary will be pouring over the match for ways to improve, they’re also under a FIFA investigation. Their fans racially abused two of England's Black players. British broadcaster ITV says racist "monkey noises" were aimed at Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham from just behind the goal posts.

Hungary is already facing two games behind closed doors in UEFA competition, after similar incidents at their national stadium during Euro 2020. England didn’t rise to the bait though and stayed focused to net four goals, leaving them comfortably on top of their qualifying group.
